Adirondack High Peaks
Sector
New York's 46 High Peaks sit inside a state constitutionally protected forest preserve, which is why the access roads stay unplowed and the trailheads are further from the road than almost anywhere else in the northeast. Snowpack runs continental: dry, faceted, and prone to persistent weak layers on north aspects.
High Peaks Interior
The core of the range around Mount Marcy and the Johns Brook valley. Deep, dry snow, hard navigation in poor visibility, and the highest avalanche exposure in the state.
Saranac Lake Lowlands
A chain of ponds and old carriage roads west of the High Peaks. Flat to gently rolling, heavily used by anglers and skiers, and the safest place in the region to be out in a storm.
Deepest base recorded in this sector: 112 cm. Sector centre %.
